Annette: EQT By Design, LLC
DG: What is your role/title within your business?
DG: What is the goal/mission of your business?
Annette: EQT by Design offers inclusive and equitable design processes for organizations. Our work gives organizations the opportunity to build sustainable, diverse, and inclusive perspectives to ensure by design their business serves the needs of their diverse customers. EQT by Design helps organizations figure out how to do it. More specifically, when an organization, business, or group says they want to have effective, impactful relationships with their customers, community, or with certain constituencies, EQT by Design turns their words into action.
DG: What is your background? What got you to where you are now?
I have strong policy and analytic skills, a wide network of community, government and business relationships, and extensive networks and relationships within Madison and Dane County’s diverse populations. For almost three decades, I have been heavily involved in issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice in Madison, and community activist. I have worked to be a connector, a networker, a problem-solver, and a bridge between community, business, government, and non-profits. Using that experience I let it springboard me into this new business.
DG: What made you decide to start your business?
I was ready for a change. I outgrew the space I was in and was looking for an opportunity to do the work outside of a specific setting, and wanted to focus, specifically, on the change management that is required when seeking to incorporate equity and inclusion strategies for customers, community, and an organization’s culture.
DG: What is your biggest accomplishment in your business and why?
I was able to turn my employee status into a consultant agreement, and secure a contract prior to leaving my employer. It was exhilirating to have the universe accept my decision and seemingly show approval by ensuring I was able to have work immediately.
DG: If you could give one quote to live by, what would it be?
“Be the change you want to see”
DG: What are three things that people may not know about you?
Annette: I love a good cold beer, Pflaumenkuchen (plum cake made with Italian plums). My high school mascot was the Washburn Millers, and I married a Miller;-)
DG: What words of advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Free your mind and the rest will follow.
DG: What does Madison need to encourage entrepreneurs to stay and grow their businesses?
Madison has a very narrow view of who an entrepreneur is and what is entrepreneurship. Moreover, it is willing to throw away seeds always looking for the “perfect” one. You can’t be first if your last in recognizing talent.
