It’s Fall y’all - change is here

September is like a reset button. Let’s take a moment to step back, reflect, plan, and strategize what lies ahead.

It’s September, I’m already smelling pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon everywhere and can hear the crinkle noise of crisp leaves blowing in the trees as we approach fall and winter. I’m itching to put away the shorts and bring out the “sweater weather” comfy outfits. September is one of my favorite months. As a Type-A personality, I thrive on routine and summer throws that into chaos. September is like a reset button. Let’s take a moment to step back, reflect, plan, and strategize what lies ahead.

Our Triple Threat Venture Training program kicks off the fall cohort in early September. This program always has more applications in the fall, usually because it’s when people spend more time thinking about what next year will look like. I love when the program starts (in spring and fall), it’s like opening the new notebook for a class (showing my age) ready to be organized and excited to learn what the course will bring.

As we continue to hear everywhere, there seems to be a lot more uncertainty in every aspect of our lives right now. A July 2025 survey by the Wall Street Journal - NORC found that “only 31% of Americans believe the American dream is achievable through hard work, marking a significant decline in faith compared to previous years. Additionally, 70% of respondents feel that the American dream either never held true or is no longer attainable.”. When that is how the majority of Americans are feeling, how do we “rise above” or “keep on keepin’ on” while running our businesses or launching our businesses.

We were Built for This Time

Here’s what else we know, America was built by entrepreneurs. The small businesses and scalable innovation is what has brought us to today’s American society and standing across the globe (for better or worse).

  • Will it look different as we move into this next season? For sure.

  • Will we stumble, have to crawl, be vulnerable in all ways? You know it!

  • Will we have to forgive (not forget) past transgressions for future prosperity? This one is hard to swallow at times because we may need to concede in order to find a balance point, but…yup

We can do it. We have done it. Past generations have done it in order for us to have what we have today, we can do it too.

“To Every Season, turn, turn, turn”

What it will take is living through the seasons. We have to go through these experiences in order to do better. We have to learn the hard lessons, lose some of the battles, and also celebrate the victories. We have to take up space, and make space for everything that is happening so we can understand the hows and whys of it. And we have to go through our fall and winter - literally and figuratively - to let things die, go dormant, and come alive in a new version of the past in our spring season.

I talk a lot about seasonality with our businesses while working with entrepreneurs. Months or periods throughout the year that are prosperous (summer), in transition (spring and fall), and “as we going to make it?” (winter). Many times I will hear “I’m the only one going through this”, I’m here to tell you: No, you’re not! We all have these seasons and sometimes the cycle can happen more than once in 12 months. The knowing and believe that things will change and understanding what will bring us into the next season and preparing for the next season is what gets us through.

Planning strategically, setting goals, holding ourselves and others accountable, and watching outcomes is what gets us through. What have you done today to prepare for tomorrow? For 3 weeks from now? For 3 months from now? For 3 years or 3 generations from now?

I continue to believe we’re all showing up doing the best we can. You’re doing great! Let me know how Doyenne and I can help and support.
